After experiencing a loss, where does one turn? In the case of D. Patton White, salvation comes from the theatre. Following an unexpected and sudden loss of his brother, the choreographer was invited by Midtown Arts and Theatre Center Houston (MATCH) core artistic director Sue Schroeder to create a new work for the company as a way of working through the grieving process. The result is the moving tribute to human relationships, As the Shadows Grow Longer. See it live next Thursday, March 14th, at MATCH.

Co-commissioned by White’s college friend Jeffrey Clark, As the Shadows Grow Longer has become a meditation on the notion that our lives have meaning because of the relationships we form over the course of a lifetime. What started out as an expression of grief has unfolded into a piece that investigates the full range of interpersonal relationships between people. But at its heart is the disorienting reality of the suddenness and unexpectedness of loss.

How can we hold onto something that is fragile? How can we live in that liminal space of the here and now? How can we carry with us the memories of those who are no longer with us? In this performance, the audience will be invited to participate at various points before, during and at the end of the piece. Participation is entirely voluntary, and not an expectation.

The mission of MATCH is to be the premier performance venue for the Houston region’s small and mid-sized arts organizations and the leading destination in the region for audiences to experience a broad spectrum of the arts. MATCH has developed an accessible, centralized hub of creativity that brings together an array of artists and art lovers from across the region’s diverse cultural, economic, and geographic communities.

Don’t pass up this opportunity to witness As the Shadows Grow Longer at MATCH. Admission to the show is $20. Wheelchair accessible tickets are also available. Tickets purchased at the door of the event are subject to an additional $5 charge.
