Needless to say, many of us have or plan to skip our annual or bi-annual vacations this year with the novel coronavirus. Luckily enough for you, you reside in the state of Texas with culture as vast as the geographical landscape. In a matter of mere hours, you can find yourself in a city or town that is completely different from Houston. Not sure where to start when planning this necessary weekend getaway in the Lonestar State? Check out our 3 recommendations below!
Galveston Island, TX
Distance from Houston: 50 miles, just under 1 hour by car
Galveston is the closest beach to Houston, only being a little under an hour away by car for most within Harris County. Many of the island’s favorite restaurants are still open during the pandemic for limited dine-in, takeout, and delivery, including Mosquito Café, Shrimp ‘N Stuff, Porch Café, Rudy & Paco, and Little Daddy’s Gumbo Bar. Other than the food, you can enjoy the beach, historic Strand District, boutiques, theatres, shops, and a special community gem by the name of La King’s Confectionery, where you can pick up some ice cream, dipped chocolates, and taffy. Galveston is a pretty sweet place if you ask us!
Austin, TX
Distance from Houston: 165 miles, 2 hours and 40 minutes by car
Houstonians can give Austinites flack from time-to-time – hey, everything is big and competitive in Texas. But, when all is said and done, we love our Central Texas neighbors, and their city makes for an excellent – and relatively close – getaway. In Austin, you’ll find delicious restaurants, food trucks, beer bars, and BBQ joints. When you’re finished enjoying one of your meals, don’t forget to take in the many epic outdoorsy activities in Austin, including biking, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and so much more. Whether you visit Lady Bird Lake or Barton Springs, the nature of ATX stands to heal all wounds.
Fredericksburg, TX
Distance from Houston: 230 miles, 3 hours and 45 minutes by car
Take a trip to the Texas Hill Country and visit one of the most charming, quaint, and romantic little towns in the Lonestar State when you plan your trip to Fredericksburg, Texas. Small yet mighty, Fredericksburg boasts many social distant-friendly activities, like Wine Road, where you’ll find nineteen open-air wineries within close proximity to one another. There’s also Main Street with plenty of shops, art galleries, cafes, and bakeries to explore. Exquisite dinners can also be found at Otto’s, Vaudeville, and Hilltop Café. Just don’t forget to stop and smell the bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas!
